Over the past four decades the Mendel Art Gallery has been associated with being a place where visual art, film, video, performance, and crafts; classical, jazz, and pop music; theatre, poetry and fiction and other arts have been presented to help us experience the world in new ways. Long-time Gallery members describe the Mendel in the sixties and seventies as the place to be and the archives have many pictures of parties and performances held in the Gallery spaces. Over the years the use of the Gallery for other than exhibiting art has become limited; however, on Saturday evening starting at 8:00 pm, January 16 the Mendel, will present Lugo, a multi-disciplinary celebration of the arts.
This fundraiser will be a rare collaboration among all art disciplines to perform for one unforgettable night. Some of Saskatoon’s best DJs and VJs will create a festive, groovy atmosphere throughout the building. As 400-500 people mingle, meet, and dance, spontaneous art happenings will unfold all around them, featuring dancers, filmmakers, musicians, actors and actresses, performance artists, poets and authors. The audience will witness and participate in this ever-changing scene, with interactive video experiences and art installations that honor the collaborative spirit of the night.
Leading up to the event, the performers will be using our blog and facebook to exchange ideas, build collaborations, and refine their performances. Our audience can literally watch the creative process unfold and join the conversation. So join us online and become part of this unrepeatable celebration that is lugo.
